This project, led by Dr. Xavier Martini at the University of Florida, investigates methods to increase pollinator visits and control whitefly populations in watermelon crops by applying kaolin and magnesium oxide. Initial findings suggest that fake flower lures enhance native bee activity and fruit production, while kaolin-based treatments may offer whitefly control without harming pollinators. The study addresses the critical need for sustainable approaches to pollination and pest management in cucurbit agriculture.
